Prenatal Classes & Beyond

Prenatal Classes & Beyond

What is pregnancy and childbirth? For first-time parents, it's a great leap into the unknown. You can read about it, watch videos, visualize it and hear stories from pregnant women and parents. But, until you actually experience it, it's hard to imagine. And until you actually have a baby to care for, it's hard to comprehend all that's involved, for you and your family. That's why The Baby Place offers comprehensive prenatal and sibling education, as well as breastfeeding education and ongoing support.

Childbirth Classes

Childbirth classes are a chance to learn in-depth about what to expect and how to cope, and, at the very least, learn a few breathing and relaxation exercises and coaching techniques for having a baby. To make sure the teachers are thorough and also personal, no more than 10 couples make up a session. Besides meeting other expectant parents and sharing pregnancy stories, you will spend lots of time practicing coaching techniques (videos you and your partner can take home are often included).

Topics to be covered by certified teachers include:

  • Nutrition and how and what you eat affects a growing fetus
  • Physical and psychological changes during pregnancy
  • Prenatal exercises
  • Stages of labor, what is happening to your body and how to deal with it
  • Signs of labor and when to call your physician or midwife
  • Breathing and relaxation techniques
  • Types of medical interventions often used during delivery, how you can avoid them and when they are necessary
  • Pain relief options during labor and delivery
  • Cesarean section
  • Physical and psychological changes after delivery
  • Infant-feeding options: breast vs. bottle
  • Characteristics and care of newborns
  • How to communicate with your provider and medical team
  • A tour of The Baby Place
