Quick, Comfortable Bone Density Scanning.
When you have your bone density test at the Women's Diagnostic Center, you can be confident that your test will be as quick and comfortable as possible, and your diagnosis will be accurate and timely. Bone density tests help predict your risk of fracture based on your bone strength. They can help detect osteoporosis earlier, and help develop an effective treatment plan. If you’ve already been diagnosed with osteoporosis, your doctor will use bone density testing to monitor progress or bone loss as well as your response to medication. The Women’s Diagnostic Center offers several choices…
Total Body DEXA Scanner
Designed to detect even the most subtle bone changes, the total body DEXA (Dual X-ray Absorptiometry) Scanner is a state-of-the-art bone assessment tool. The machine uses two x-ray beams (one high energy, one low energy) to scan your bones. The thickness of the bone will determine how much of the x-rays pass through it, thus measuring bone density.
During your bone mineral density test, radiologists will use the DEXA Scanner to analyze the bone mass in your spine and hip. The test is fast, precise and completely painless, and its results help determine whether you are at risk for fracture.
Achilles Express Heel Ultrasound
The Achilles Express passes ultrasound through the heel. The heel is measured because its bone is similar to that found in the spine and hip, where osteoporotic fractures occur most. Ultrasound does not travel well through air. Therefore, during an Achilles Express test, warm water fills membranes that contact your heel to provide a path for the ultrasound energy to follow.
A small amount of alcohol will be sprayed on your heel. The Achilles Express test requires a bare foot, so you’ll remove your sock, stocking, or pantyhose. An Achilles Express test takes about 1 minute. During the test, keep your heel as still as possible for best results. Caution: Avoid Achilles Express tests if you have a sore on your heel or sole. Please tell the person operating the Achilles Express of any such problems to help prevent transmission of an infection.
